Making Homemade Solar Cells

By Sanno Zaye

Being environmentally conscience is not only something that is good for your planet, but can also make you feel good about doing things that will make a small difference to the world that you live in. One very effective way of doing something positive for the planet, and something that will save you money over time, is solar energy. Solar energy makes it possible for you to eliminate electric bills from your home completely as well as reduce your carbon footprint significantly. While there are many different sites that discuss making your own homemade solar cells, the truth is you are better off buying the real thing because they will be much more effective than homemade solar cells.

When it comes to homemade solar cells you will use copper flashing, two alligator clip leads, a micro ammeter, electric stove (gas won't do), a two liter bottle, emptied and cut in half, salt, tap water, sandpaper and sheet metal shears. Once you have all of your supplies you will place half of the copper flashing on the stove top and allow it to get so hot that it changes colors, keep it on the stove thirty more minutes, it will turn black and even blacker still, this is perfectly normal. Once the time is up, allow it to cool on the burner. During the cooling process the black oxidation will flake off due to shrinkage. Once completely cool, brush off the rest of the black oxidation and you are well on your way to completing your homemade solar cells.

Curve the rest of the copper flashing so that it will fit nicely in the bottom half of the two liter bottle. Now attach the alligator clip leads to the copper flashing and then combine salt with the tap water to make saltwater and add it to the two liter bottle, until almost full. Attach the leads to the meter and place it in the sun and watch it generate power. This is a totally cool thing to do, making homemade solar cells, however you are not going to be powering your home this way. This is a great science fair project for your kids, or something fun to play with.
